Nonprofits have their own unique challenges and opportunities. Because they are charged with providing public benefit, they are encouraged, and need, to reach out to others to provide services focused on varying aspects of the sustainability paradigm. Their challenge can be similar to the other sectors in that they can become isolated in their thinking and narrow in their approach to solving problems. Rather than issue focused, as they have traditionally operated, nonprofits and civil society would benefit from transcending their relatively limited approach to create broader and more holistic solutions.
Sustainability can be an incredible tool and foundation for the nonprofit sector to help break down the barriers and silos that exist around themselves, rather to embrace collaborative partnerships and supporting roles to achieve mutually-beneficial results. The OCSC can identify the players, focus the issues and support the cross-sector cooperation needed to achieve regional systemic positive change.
