“A World We Can Change” conference on March 13


The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) invites your students and you to attend  “A World We Can Change” conference on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at the Long Beach Convention Center.

SCAQMD’s goal is to reach approximately 8,000 students to educate, inspire
and engage our youth in air quality and environmental issues. To this end,
SCAQMD is partnering with major environmental education organizations such
as the Alliance for Climate Education (ACE) and Global Inheritance. ACE will
be presenting their awarding winning assembly to educate conference goers on
climate science and what each individual can do to make a positive
difference in our environment. The Expo Hall will be like no other,
featuring hands-on and interactive exhibits, state-of-the-art technology
displays, and information on educational, volunteer, and career
opportunities. In one exhibit, students will have the opportunity to learn
firsthand from Global Inheritance about energy and sustainability issues as
they power a live DJ booth by riding stationary bicycles.

OCSC Announces Fall Leadership Dialogue “Sustainability’s Business Proposition: Making Money by Doing Good”


The Orange County Sustainability Collaborative (OCSC) has finalized the schedule for its Fall Leadership Dialogue Event, “Sustainability’s Business Proposition:  Making Money by Doing Good.”  The panel discussion and facilitated discussion afterward will be held October 19, 2012, in the Multi-Purpose Building at Sweet Shade Neighborhood Park, 15 Sweet Shade, Irvine, CA 92696, from 2 to 5 pm.   Check in will start at 1:30 pm.

The event will explore sustainability’s business proposition in depth and provide attendees opportunities to consider practical applications of sustainability principles and practices within their organizations.   It is intended for sustainability leaders from industry, academia, public agencies and non-governmental organizations and others interested in promoting more sustainable business practices.  For more detail on information planned to appeal to each of these groups, please visit the event webpage at www.ocsustainability.org/events.

Introduction to Stormwater Management: Keeping up with Compliance

State and local programs regulating municipal and industrial stormwater discharges are constantly changing.

Professionals involved with monitoring, implementing, or reporting on best management practices must be able to understand and support regulations aimed at controlling stormwater runoff. This one-day class will provide an overview of the history and development of stormwater programs and review current regulations and reporting requirements.

The not-for-profit Orange County Sustainability Collaborative (OCSC) announced today that after expanding its board of directors from five seats to seven this month, it is seeking well-qualified candidates to fill three uncompensated volunteer positions for 2-year terms.  Further, once the board is fully expanded to seven members, it will select its new chairperson.

Applications will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. (PDT) on Monday, August 20, 2012.  To be considered, candidates should carefully review the evaluation criteria and then email the following documents to OCSC’s Board Member and Secretary, Ms. Kirsten Anderson, at kanderson@ocsustainability.org:

  • A cover letter of no more than two pages concisely:
    • Stating candidacy
    • Expressing motivation for serving as a board member, and
    • Briefly summarizing significant professional and personal qualifications

LEADERSHIP CHANGES AT THE ORANGE COUNTY SUSTAINABILITY COLLABORATIVE

Trabuco Canyon, CA, July 6, 2012

The not-for-profit Orange County Sustainability Collaborative (OCSC) announced today that its co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. John W. Grosskopf, will resign effective July 10, 2012.  Mr. Grosskopf has accepted the position of Director of Environment, Health, Safety, Social Responsibility and Sustainability with a major producer of electrical control systems in the Pacific Northwest.   Despite his physical move, he will continue with OCSC as a senior advisor.

While the Board of Directors completes its search for a new chairman, Mr. Grosskopf’s responsibilities will be transferred to Mr. William Borges, OCSC Board Member and Treasurer.  In a joint statement, the two leaders said “the planning and delivery of OCSC’s ambitious sustainability programs and projects will actually accelerate during this leadership transition”.

The interim chairman went on to say:  “John’s dedication and energy are inspirations for all of OCSC’s volunteers, interns and stakeholders.  We will continue to work hard – and smart – to make his generously shared vision of a “Greener Orange” a reality.”

Great Park to train veterans to be farmers


IRVINE – Orange County Great Park will conduct an eight-month, $145,000 internship program to train six veterans for employment in the agricultural industry.

The pilot project, unanimously approved by the park board Thursday, will include 800 hours of classroom and fieldwork instruction and 480 hours of employment with Irvine Ranch Conservancy.
